A Return to Wholeness

From an early age, many of us learn the mind and body are separate, but when we try to change our lives, we run into a difficulty. In trying to change the few inches between our ears, in trying to break an old habit or form a new one, we encounter great resistance.

   Our body, and what it has become, can limit our very thoughts. Our posture, and our way of moving and breathing, can limit our will and our will power. Sometimes the best way of changing our thinking is by changing our doing.

   Perhaps you already have a sense of this. You move your arm in an unaccustomed manner and suddenly remember the fall on the ice which injured that arm. It is almost as if the arm, not the brain, holds the memory. Perhaps you even see the event reenacted, as if on a movie screen, and the reenactment seems to occur in your arm, not in your mind.

Body and Mind Connection

   Or it may be you intuitively sense a connection between the frozen way you hold your shoulders and the way you can express yourself to others. That makes perfect sense, for while the mind and the body are not the same thing, neither are they two different things.

   Many people who wish to live a more balanced life find some method of body movement essential. For some that method is yoga, and one of the best yoga books is by Donna Farhi.

   Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit by Donna Farhi is subtitled "A Return to Wholeness." In this book, the author explains the principles of movement which underlie yoga practice and their connection to a balanced life. The diagrams and illustrations are excellent. The explanations of what to do, and not do, are unusually clear.

   Donna Farhi lives in New Zealand and instructs throughout the world. She is also the author of The Breathing Book.
