The Mitford Series

  In 2003, after reading more than half of Oprah's recommended books, Tamara Mitchell began The Mitford Years series. She fell totally in love with them. She says there is a night and day difference between Oprah's selections and Jan Karon's series.

  The first of the books is At Home In Mitford. Like each of the other books, it is set in the small town of Mitford, North Carolina, and the main character is an Episcopal priest, Father Tim Kavanagh. But you don't have to be Episcopalian or Christian to appreciate Father Tim. He and the other characters have a goodness, and an ordinariness, which will make you like them.

   Tamara says Jan Karon's books feel like Christmas. You get the overwhelming feeling it should be snowing outside and you are sitting in your favorite chair, before a blazing fire, in your most comfy robe and slippers, sipping hot chocolate.

   When you get to know Mitford, you may want to move there. But watch out for Father Tim's gargantuan dog, Barnabas. He likes people so much he'll jump up on you, put one paw on each shoulder, and lick your face.

There are boxed collections of the first three Mitford books and the first six Mitford books.

The Mitford novels in order of publication are: At Home at Mitford, A Light in the Window, These High Green Hills, Out to Canaan, A New Song, A Common Life: the Wedding Story, In This Mountain, Shepherds Abiding, and Light from Heaven.
